Staff Spotlight: Charlene Carr, Cooperative Extension Service

Charlene Carr began her second stint as an New Mexico State University staff member in 2020. A two-time NMSU graduate, Carr is NMSU’s Southern Pueblo agricultural and 4-H agent.

“In collaboration with Pueblo communities, I provide educational programming that meet Pueblo communities agricultural, natural resources, 4-H and community development needs,” she said.  

“It is my dream job to serve my community through Extension to promote healthy Native Hanu (Keres word for the people),” Carr said. “As a Pueblo of Laguna tribal member, I was taught our Hanu, values and practices are vital to our way of life. These teachings and values are factors that I incorporate into the Pueblo Extension programming. NMSU provides support and a great working environment that has allowed me collaborate and serve Native communities that compliments Pueblo ways of life. I also want to acknowledge my family, community and NMSU mentors/colleagues present and past who have made my career possible.”

Carr was one of the 71 unsung heroes the university recognized Jan. 11. 

She earned her bachelor’s degree in plant and environmental science in 2009 and her master’s degree in plant and environmental science with an emphasis in soil science and minor in applied statistics in 2012.
